Lumbar Spinal Fusion
Although Central NJ Spine always turns to conservative methods of treatment when possible, we do understand that sometimes conditions require surgical treatments. When it comes to lower back pain, one such surgical treatment is lumbar spinal fusion. This procedure helps improve stability in the lumbar region of thelower back. During the procedure, the spinal canal will be widened to remove all or part of any herniated discs in the lower back. Once removed, any affected vertebrae will be supported, reinforced, and stabilized using bone grafts between the vertebrae. For added stability, titanium screws and rods will also be placed into the vertebrae.
Benefits of Lumbar Spinal Fusion
As with many spinal surgical procedures, a big benefit of lumbar spinal fusion is that it will relieve any pain in the lower back, hips, buttocks, and legs as the result of a number of different conditions. Patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, spinal fractures, and other conditions will greatly benefit from this surgical procedure.
What to Expect After the Surgery
After the surgery is complete, one of the compassionate doctors at Central NJ Spine will go over all the important instructions for your recovery and will answer any questions you might have. Follow-up appointments will also be scheduled to monitor your recovery. Typically, patients are allowed to return home within just a few days after the procedure, although it could take several months for full fusion of the bone graft and vertebrae to take place. Although every patient is different, most begin feeling a noticeable change within two to six weeks and experience less and less pain over time.
